ChatGPT vs Claude vs Perplexity: which AI subscription should a solo business pay for?

What each plan costs, what the free plans cover, and which one fits the work you do most.

ChatGPT vs Claude vs Perplexity: which AI subscription should a solo business pay for? (AI Solution Vault guide cover)

If you run a business on your own and you're about to pay for one AI assistant, ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity are probably on your shortlist. All three have a free plan and a paid plan near $20 a month, so the price tag rarely settles it. What does settle it is the work you hand over: drafting and admin, long documents and writing in your voice, or research you need to back up with sources.

The short answer: pick ChatGPT if you want one assistant that covers the most ground, including images, voice and spreadsheet help. Pick Claude if most of your AI time goes into writing, proposals, SOPs and long files. Pick Perplexity if your main job for AI is research and you want a source link next to every answer.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month and is billed monthly only. ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month in the US.
  • Claude Pro costs $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month on the annual plan, which is $200 billed up front.
  • Perplexity Pro costs $17 a month billed annually, and every Perplexity answer, free or paid, comes with citations.
  • ChatGPT Business and Claude Team both start at two seats, so a one-person business normally buys an individual plan.

Prices and plan details as of October 21, 2026, from each vendor's own pricing and help pages, in US dollars. All three tools are in our research category.

If you pay for a full year, the gap is small. ChatGPT Plus comes to $240 a year because OpenAI doesn't sell it annually. Claude Pro is $200 a year on the annual plan or $240 paid monthly. Perplexity Pro's annual price works out to $204 a year. That's example math from the list prices above.

ChatGPT: the widest set of everyday tools

ChatGPT

The all-round assistant for drafting, brainstorming and quick research when you only want one AI subscription.

freemiumNewWriting · Research · Emailchecked 2026-10-15

ChatGPT is the safe pick if you want one subscription to handle a bit of everything. On Plus, OpenAI's pricing page lists projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs, expanded deep research, and its Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets extensions, which are limited on Free and Go. Image creation and voice chats are on every plan, with higher limits as you pay more.

The free plan is more useful than most people expect. OpenAI lists unlimited everyday text chats on Free, subject to abuse guardrails, with tighter limits on uploads, images and deep research. If your AI use is mostly quick drafts and questions, start there.

Go, at $8 a month in the US, is the budget step. It raises the limits on uploads, images and data analysis and adds scheduled tasks, but OpenAI's pricing page says the plan may include ads, and the Excel, Word and Sheets extensions stay limited. If you'd use ChatGPT inside your spreadsheets or documents, Plus is the plan to compare against Claude Pro.

Claude: long documents and writing in your own voice

Claude logoCL

Claude

Strong at long documents and writing in your own voice; good for proposals, SOPs and newsletters.

freemiumNewWriting · Researchchecked 2026-10-15

Claude earns its place when your work is mostly words: proposals, client emails, SOPs, newsletters and long PDFs you need summarized or rewritten. The free plan already includes web search, file creation, memory across chats and up to five projects. Pro adds the Research feature, Claude in Chrome, Claude for Microsoft 365 and Outlook, and the option to hand off and schedule tasks.

Know how the limits work before you pay. Claude doesn't give a fixed message count. Usage resets on a rolling five-hour window, paid plans add weekly limits on top, and Anthropic says Pro gives at least five times the usage of Free per five-hour session. If you hit the ceiling every day, Max starts at $100 a month for five or twenty times Pro's usage.

One setting to check: Claude's pricing page lists model training as opt-out on Free, Pro and Max. If you paste client material into Claude, open your privacy settings and turn training off. Team plans don't train on your data by default.

Perplexity: research with a source next to every answer

Perplexity logoPE

Perplexity

Answer engine with cited sources; handy for quick market and competitor research.

freemiumNewResearchchecked 2026-10-16

Perplexity works more like a search engine that writes the answer for you. Every answer, even on the free plan, comes with citations, so you can click through and check the claim before it goes in a client report or a blog post. That makes it a good fit for competitor checks, market questions and anything you might need to defend later.

Pro costs $17 a month billed yearly. Perplexity says it raises every free limit and adds premium data sources such as PitchBook and Statista, search across your files and connected apps, and the ability to pick which AI model answers each question. Perplexity's plan page also notes that Pro is for personal use. If you add staff, Enterprise Pro starts at $40 a seat per month or $400 a seat per year.

Where it's weaker: Perplexity is built around finding and summarizing information. If you want a writing partner that holds your brand voice across a long draft, Claude or ChatGPT will feel more natural.

Which one should you pay for?

Match the subscription to the job you do most often:

  • Mostly emails, social captions, quick drafts and admin: start on ChatGPT Free, then move to Plus when you need projects, deeper research or the Office and Sheets extensions.
  • Mostly proposals, long documents and writing that has to sound like you: Claude Pro. Pay monthly for the first month or two, then switch to annual if you keep using it, since $200 a year is $40 less than paying monthly.
  • Mostly research, fact-checking and competitor tracking: Perplexity. Its free plan already cites sources, so test it on a week of your real questions before you pay.
  • A bit of everything and only one budget line: ChatGPT Plus covers the most ground, with images and voice on top of writing and research.

Paying for two only makes sense when they do different jobs for you. A common split is Claude or ChatGPT for writing, plus Perplexity for research you need to cite. Two general assistants that overlap mostly double your bill.

If you'd like help picking prompts and workflows once you've chosen, our community at Amplif-AI Your Business on Skool shares a new skill every week for people running a business on their own.

Before you subscribe

  • Run the same three tasks from your own week through each free plan. Use real work, like a client email, a page of notes to summarize and one research question.
  • Check your currency and tax. OpenAI says Go pricing is localized in some markets, and Anthropic's listed prices don't include tax.
  • Look at billing terms. ChatGPT Plus and Pro bill monthly only. Claude Pro is cheaper on the annual plan, and Perplexity lists Pro at its annual price.
  • Turn off model training in Claude's settings if you'll paste client material, as covered above.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro better for a small business?

It depends on the work. ChatGPT Plus covers more ground, with images, voice, scheduled tasks and Office and Sheets extensions. Claude Pro suits owners who spend most of their AI time on proposals, long documents and writing in their own voice. Both cost $20 a month on monthly billing, so try each free plan on your real tasks first.

Is Claude cheaper than ChatGPT?

On a yearly basis, slightly. Claude Pro is $17 a month on the annual plan, billed as $200 up front, compared with $240 a year if you pay $20 monthly. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month and OpenAI doesn't offer annual billing for it. ChatGPT Go is cheaper than both at $8 a month in the US.

Can I use Perplexity instead of ChatGPT?

For research, yes. Every Perplexity answer comes with citations, which helps when you need to check a claim or share sources with a client. For drafting long documents, emails in your brand voice or image work, a general assistant like ChatGPT or Claude is usually the better fit, and many owners keep Perplexity for research only.

Do I need a team or business plan if I work alone?

Usually not. ChatGPT Business needs at least two seats, and Claude Team is sold for teams of 2 to 150. A one-person business normally buys an individual plan such as ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro or Perplexity Pro. Perplexity notes that Pro is for personal use, so check its terms if you add staff later.

Does Claude train on what I paste into it?

On Free, Pro and Max, Claude's pricing page lists model training as opt-out, so check your privacy settings and turn it off before you paste client material. Claude Team plans don't train on your data by default. If you handle sensitive client files, read each vendor's privacy page before you upload anything.
